I had a few programs planned for Teen Read Week, but my only successful one was our after hours teen party. The teens had a blast! At almost every teen services workshop I attend, the main piece of advice is to find a way to say yes to the teens. I definitely accomplished that...
On Thursday I had 9 teens, 5 of them regulars, who came to the library and stayed for three hours after the library closed. They chose to watch Coraline, which was our bookclub pick this month. I ordered pizza and brought in popcorn, cookies, brownies, soda, and fruit and veggie trays. They actually sat and ate and watched the entire movie.
When the movie was finished we played Statues. It's a game where we turned off all the lights (this is where I had to remind myself to say yes!) and one person had a flashlight. That person would walk around and try to catch the others moving. If you were moving when the light was on you, then you were out. They played this for a while then settled down and played Apples to Apples, and some of them colored the adult coloring sheet bookmarks that I happened to have out as a passive program.
As parents started showing up at 11 I had many teens tell me that they wish they could be here all night. I guess next time I will be adventurous and plan an all night teen lock-in!
