Nelson Beats the Odds is an inspiring semiautobiographical story about overcoming obstacles and not letting labels define who you will grow up to become. I love that Nelson had a great support system and was determined to graduate from college. He never let anybody stand in his way, and even proved to be a great influence on others like his brothers. This book not only addresses mental health issues, but race as well. I have heard too many kids be made fun of for "acting white", this book addresses that and again encourages children to not let labels stop them. I can see this book appealing to a wide range of young readers, from elementary school up to high school. I love the graphic novel format and the illustrations.
I received an email from the author, Ronnie Sidney II, advertising his book and offering to visit schools and libraries. He even sent me an e-proof version. He is working on a second book called Nelson Beats The Odds: Tameka's New Dress. He is located in Virginia, but seems eager to talk to kids who want to hear his story.
